St. John police on Saturday arrested Steven Dean Reichel, 47, and Scott Chamberlain in Cruz Bay Park after a disturbance that began when Reichel allegedly assaulted a police officer.
The incident began just before 5 p.m. when a police officer allegedly saw Reichel sleeping on a bench on the park’s northeast side. According to a press release, the officer asked him not to sleep on the benches and not to strew his personal possessions about the area.
The police press release alleged that Reichel began to use profanity and to be aggressive, at one point grabbing the officer’s hand and then pushing it. The officer called for assistance and Reichel was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and battery, interfering with an officer while discharging their duties, destruction of government property and resisting arrest, the release said.
Around the same time, a person later identified as Scott Chamberlain allegedly came into the area where Reichel and the officer were standing and started to pick up the personal property in the area.
Allegedly Reichel and Chamberlain began arguing and Chamberlain threatened to physically harm Reichel. Chamberlain was arrested and charged with disturbance of the peace and threats, the release said.
Police Department spokesman Melody Rames had no age for Chamberlain.
Both suspects were held in the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending their Advice of Rights hearing.
