Constitution 2008 Forum Set Feb. 23 on St. Thomas
The University of the Virgin Islands invites the St. Thomas community to the island's first public forum in the Constitution 2008 public education campaign being conducted in support of the Territory's Fifth Virgin Islands Constitutional Convention. The program, "Constitution 2008: Come Hear! Come Share!" will take place at 6 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel. All are invited to attend and participate in an exciting exchange on issues which will surround the Convention when it opens in July 2007. Miss UVI Contestants Featured on the Web
Four UVI students – Janeisha John, Sharifa Maloney, Zahra Spencer and Shamika Thomas – are vying for the 2007 Miss UVI title. "Leading Ladies Poised for Greatness" is the theme of the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Photos of the contestants – plus biographical details for each – are available from the UVI web site – http://www.uvi.edu. Information on ticket prices and ticket sales outlets are also featured.
Film Series on St. Croix Campus to Mark Black History Month
A Black History Month: Film/Documentary Series is scheduled this week (Feb. 19 – 23) on UVI's St. Croix campus. The series, which will feature a different film each day at noon at the Cafetorium, is free and open to all UVI students, faculty and staff. The series opens today (Monday, Feb. 19) with "Catch A Fire," starring Derek Luke and Tim Robbins.
Other films in the series include: Tuesday: "Nelson Mandela" – a documentary; Wednesday: "Madea's Family Reunion;" Thursday: "General Colin L. Powell" – a documentary; and Friday: "Lean on Me."

UVI Accounting Association Sets Feb. 24 St. Thomas Induction
The University of the Virgin Islands Accounting Association invites the UVI Community to attend its annual induction ceremony at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. The ceremony will be held in the T-101 of the Teacher's Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. The Accounting Association is committed to student development. Bucs Schedule Two Days of Home Games, Feb. 23-24
UVI's Buccaneers and Lady Bucs will play UPR-Humacao in home games on Friday, Feb. 23 (first game at 1 p.m.), and then host UPR-Rio Piedras on Saturday, Feb. 24 (first game at 1 p.m.) All games are in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
In last week's road games, the Lady Bucs took two wins, defeating American University, 63-31, and downing Metropolitan University, 71-69, in overtime. The Lady Bucs are now 4-1 on the season.
In their matchups, the Buccaneers men's team lost to American University, 84-69, and to Metropolitan University, 69-64. The Buccaneers are now 3-4 on the season. The UVI basketball schedule and game results are available from the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.
'Misconceptions About Islam' Lecture Set Feb. 24 on St. Croix
A public lecture and discussion on "Misconceptions about Islam" are scheduled at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix Campus. Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations for Michigan, will be the presenter. The session is sponsored by UVI's Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. Golden Key Honour Society Induction Scheduled Feb. 25 on St. Thomas
The St. Thomas campus chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society will conduct an induction ceremony at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. St. Croix Pre-Alumni Club Plans Meeting for Feb. 25
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus Class of 2007 Pre-alumni Club will hold a meeting for all graduating seniors at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, in the UVI Cafetorium. Saturday Schedule Changed for Health Services on St. Thomas
The Saturday schedule for UVI's Health Services Center on the St. Thomas campus has been changed. The Center is now open on Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Center previously maintained morning hours. For more information, contact Health Services Supervisor Ronda Hatchett at 693-1124.
March 1 is Application Deadline for UVI Science, Math Scholarships
March 1 is the deadline to apply for more than $240,000 in scholarships and support for students studying math and science at the University of the Virgin Islands. The federal funds are offered through UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) program. Current and prospective UVI students who will be enrolled during the summer and fall of 2007 and the spring of 2008 are eligible. Lecture to Highlight Nutrition Month Slated March 9 on Both Campuses
A lecture titled "Eat Right and Be Safe for Spring Break" will be presented at the University of the Virgin Islands at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9. Nutritionist Deanna Dahlem will make the presentation in room 213 of the Teacher Education Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 302a on the St. Croix campus. All UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to this free presentation, sponsored by the Health Services Center. For more information, contact the Health Services office at 693-1124.
Electronic Waste Collection Drive Set Feb 22-24 on St. Croix Campus
An electronic waste collection drive will be conducted on UVI's St. Croix campus from Feb. 22 through 24, in conjunction with the V.I. Waste Management Authority. Departments wishing to participate should call 692-4161 or 692-4170.
SBDC Sets Video-Conference on The Surety Source on Feb. 20
A video-conference designed for contractors needing underwriter (bonding) assistance, and help with bid placement is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center on the St. Thomas campus. Steve Golia, president of the Surety Source, will be the featured presenter. The video presentation is sponsored by UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC). For details, call 776-3206.
Seminars on Business Tax Filing Set for St. John, St. Thomas
Seminars on filing 2006 business taxes will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in collaboration with the V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue on St. John on Wednesday, Feb. 28 and on St. Thomas on Wednesday, March 7. The presenter will be Revenue Agent II Clifford Charleswell. Topics to be covered include: tax changes for 2006; local and federal taxes required from V.I. businesses; filing business taxes accurately; and how returns are selected for audit. The St. John session will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Legislature Building in Cruz Bay. The St. Thomas session runs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center.
