Reichhold to Host Lorna Freeman and Puerto Rico Symphony Oct. 23
The Reichhold Center for the Arts will continue its 2004-2005 season with a performance by Lorna Freeman in concert with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, Oct. 23. CLEP Registration Deadline Extended to Oct. 22
The deadline for students to register to take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests has been extended to Friday, Oct. 22. Students can register for the CLEP tests in the Division of Enrollment Management Office on the second floor of the Classroom Administration (CA) Building. CLEP is a national computer-based testing program. It is an inexpensive way to accrue credits and the exams are available in a wide array of subjects, including Spanish, French, history, accounting, computer information systems, chemistry, biology, math, literature and sociology.
The CLEP test will be administered on St. Thomas on October 28 in the CA Building – room 101. For more information call 693-1152.
St. Croix Family Fun Set for Oct. 29-31, Xtaushun, Xpress Bands to Entertain
The UVI St. Croix campus invites all alumni, faculty, students and staff of the University to attend the Annual Family and Friends Weekend, scheduled for October 29-31. The weekend will include several activities beginning with 'Midnight Bowling' scheduled for 10 p.m. on Oct. 29, at Tropical Ten Pins Bowling Alley. Activities continue with a welcome reception and karaoke from 6-10 p.m. on Oct. 30, in the Cafetorium. A jam featuring the Xtaushun and Phranchise bands will follow.
The highlight of the event is the Family Fun Day scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. The fun day will include a softball game with a UVI team versus a team made up of Central High School classes of the 1970's. Xpress Band will provide live entertainment. Other activities scheduled for the fun day are sack races, dominoes, a greased pig chase, watermelon eating contest, Sumo wrestling, face painting and tie-dying.

Voices That Count Conference Last Sessions on Friday on St. Thomas
People with disabilities will have the opportunity to voice their concerns about issues affecting them at the 2004 Voices That Count conference. The final forums in the conference – which is designed to bring about frank discussion among people with disabilities, representatives of support services and government officials – will be held . 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 22 at the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel. Vendor, Contest Applications for Ag and Food Fair Available
The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Committee has announced that Friday, Oct. 22, is the deadline for vendors to submit applications for space at the Nov. 20-21 Agriculture and Food Fair. Vendor applications will be accepted in the areas of educational exhibits, sales (including food, drinks, arts and crafts, plants and livestock), and entertainment and amusements. Registration for the participants in the Agriculture and Food Fair's contests, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 21, are available in the following categories: heaviest pumpkin, heaviest turkey, best-tasting sweetbread and best-tasting maube. UVI Runners to Participate in Cross Country Championships
All UVI runners who attended the qualification tournament for entry to the ODI Cross Country Championships met qualifications. The men's team consists of Kamal Russell, Hondo Freeman and Jay Wiltshire from the St. Croix campus, and Josh Monty from the St. Thomas campus. Juliet Smith and Novella Harrison make up the women's team. Both teams will compete in the ODI Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27 in Ponce, PR. UVI St. Croix Campus to Host International Literature Conference
The University of the Virgin Islands, in partnership with Morehouse College and Indiana University/ Purdue, will host the Sixth International Conference on Caribbean Literature Nov. 3-5 on its St. Croix campus. More than 125 scholars representing 75 colleges and universities will gather to discuss a wide range of issues resonating in Caribbean Literature as well as the writers who explore them. Guest speakers are Kamau Brathwaite, Brenda Flanagan, Elizabeth Nunez and Michael Gilkes.
The theme of this year's conference is "Being and/in Narrative: The Historical Tradition of Caribbean Literature." The registration cost is $250.00 for the entire program or $75.00 for one-day attendance. Early Childhood Literature, Literacy and Languages Conference Set
The third annual V.I. Early Childhood Literature, Literacy and Languages Conference will be held Nov. 13-14 on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus. Day one of the conference will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, in the Chase Auditorium (Business Building Room 110). Senator Louis Hill will be the opening ceremony keynote speaker at 6 p.m. Day two of the conference is scheduled for 1-8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, in the classrooms of the Business and Education Buildings.
Pre-registration is $5 and registration at the door is $10. TV's 'Boston Legal' Consulting Producer to Present Free Lecture at Reichhold
The Forum in conjunction with the University of the Virgin Islands Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a lecture-demonstration by Robert Breech, senior vice president of David E. Kelley Productions Inc., at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Reichhold Center. David E. Kelley Productions Inc. produces several drama series including "The Practice," "Ally McBeal," "Picket Fences" and "Chicago Hope." Breech served as executive producer of 'The Practice' for eight seasons and is now a consulting producer on ABC's "Boston Legal." He is working on a legal reality show slated to begin in November.
During the lecture-demonstration, Breech will discuss the creative process that goes into the production of a one-hour drama in the Kelley organization. The process, as described by Breech, includes three, overlapping phases of production. He will also explain the relationship that exists between writers, producers and actors; the physical demands of production; and the give-and-take among the writers and slegal advisers. The discussion will end with a question and answer session. The public is invited. The lecture-demonstration is free.
