NEW NOAA VESSEL IS LAB FOR UVI RESEARCHERS

The R/V Ronald H. Brown looks like a small cruise ship, but it's a scientific center, not a floating hotel. For its maiden Caribbean voyage this month, UVI students and marine science research staff were aboard and working around the clock, taking part in an ongoing study of Caribbean and Atlantic waters that is looking for clues to climate change.

LYONS TAKES ON DEVELOPMENT FOR PARK FRIENDS

As a child, Kim Lyons enjoyed much of what the V.I. National Park in her native St. John had to offer. Now, she's back as development director at the Friends of the Park. "I bring the perspective of a St. Johnian having grown up in the park," she said.

PARK NAMES TWO NEW MANAGERS

– V.I. National Park has two new managers. Stephen Clark, who has been at the park since August 2000, is now the park's chief ranger. John Javor, a 28-year National Park Service veteran, was named chief of maintenance.

WAPA WORK TO CLOSE NORTH SHORE ROAD SATURDAY

North Shore Road will be closed between Route 72 near the Estate Glynn gas station and Route 80 at the Salt River entrance on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. while WAPA crews extend water lines in the area.

Gov. Charles W. Turnbull announced Friday that he has approved the contracting of Kenneth Mapp as director of finance and administration for the Public Finance Authority. The news came as a surprise to at least one of the four other board members. It also contradicted action taken by the board on Feb. 28.

SENATORS FUME AS MORE INVITATIONS GO IGNORED

The battle between Gov. Charles W. Turnbull and the 24th Legislature appeared to escalate Friday, as Sen. Emmett Hansen II threatened to "zero out" the Police Department's budget and transfer it and the police responsibilities to the separate V.I. Housing Authority Police -- which was represented at his committee hearing, while the VIPD was not.
