As more and more test results come back, the number of Virgin Islanders confirmed positive is holding at 51, unchanged for the past five days. The proportion of tests coming back positive appears to be declining.
On Saturday, the Department of Health reported 51 confirmed COVID-19 infections and 299 negative test results, with just under 15 percent of them coming up positive. Additional test results came in Monday and Tuesday, with no new positive results yet. As of Tuesday evening, 51 had tested positive and 331 had tested negative out of 382 test results, for a cumulative rate of 13 percent of all tests showing positive for the new coronavirus.
As new results come in the percentage of positive cases is going down. Ten days ago, on April 5, there were 42 confirmed cases, with 206 negative results, so 17 percent of all results were positive. And a few days earlier on April 2, when there were 37 confirmed cases, more than 19 percent of all tests had come back positive.
Looking just at new test results, instead of cumulative totals, the biggest jump so far in confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 occurred in the two days from March 20 to March 22, which saw 11 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 tests out of 30 new test results, for 37 percent of those new test results showing positive for the virus.
The previous eight days have seen 48 new test results with six new confirmed COVID-19. That amounts to 12.5 percent of new test results over those eight days showing positive for coronavirus. The previous 5 days have seen 32 new test results and zero new cases, but time will tell how much the rate of infection has actually slowed as more tests come back. As of Tuesday night, 35 tests were pending.
