DeGannes, David Repeat in STAR’s 34th Annual Founders’ Run

Under the cloudy skies that runners find comfortable, 25 of them contested the Annual Founders’ Run on Sunday, Oct. 9. This was the 34th anniversary of a friendly run in 1982 organized and attended by persons who would later establish the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners (STAR) and offer schedules of running and walking events that continue to today.
As they had several times before, Shane DeGannes and Ruth Ann David outpaced their pursuers over the 3.1-mile course, with DeGannes finishing as first male in 17:41 and David as winning female in 20:39. Both had won previously in somewhat faster times, and the standing course records of 16:08:55 and 19:06, respectively, remained unthreatened.
In the Men’s Open division, Connor Mackelvey was second in 19:06 followed by last year’s winner Brad Kappel (22:35). Women’s Open runners-up were Lisa Parfitt (22:56) and Keara Joseph (24:31).
Youth (under 18) provided excellent performances as well. Karan Gaikwad (20:56) and Silas Wisehart (21:27) finished among the top five males; Shaia David (23:59) and Kaia Anspacher (24:39) finished among the top five females.
First place finishers, female and male, in three age groups received subscriptions to running magazines as did two other participants chosen by random draw.

STAR will continue to assist the Interscholastic Cross-Country series, which meets on Tuesday afternoons, Oct. 11, 18 and 25, starting at 3:45 p.m. STAR’s next race is the 18th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness 2-mile Walk/Run. This benefit race will start at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the West Indian Company.
