Man Killed in Morning Shooting

Shane Heyliger, a 34-year-old resident of Altona and Welgunst, was killed Monday morning in a daylight shooting on Veterans Drive in the Charlotte Amalie waterfront area.

It was the ninth homicide on St. Thomas since the start of the year, the 14th in the territory.

According to the V.I. Police Department, the shooting took place at 9:38 a.m. in the area of First Express and Burger Maxx.

Witnesses said they heard five or six shots, and thought momentarily that it was leftover fireworks from Carnival, before realizing that a crime had taken place.

Arriving on the scene, police closed off the area, where they found the unresponsive body of a man identified as Heyliger.

Heyliger died on the scene as a result of a fatal gunshot wound, the police reported.

No other information on the shooting was available early Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information concerning the crime can phone the Investigations Bureau at 1-340-714-9823, the 911 emergency call center or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
