Christensen to Announce Gubernatorial Candidacy Saturday

Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen will announce her candidacy for governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands Saturday at events on St. Croix and St. Thomas.

On St. Croix, Christensen will announce her campaign at 9 a.m. at her Golden Rock headquarters, 1C Golden Rock, across from the Almeric Christian Court Building. Refreshments will be served.

She’ll hold a second announcement on St. Thomas at 5 p.m. at her Frenchtown headquarters. across from the Frenchtown Post Office. Refreshments will be served and music will be provided by the Spectrum Band.

She will finish the day with a gathering from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at her Barren Spot headquarters. Music will be provided by Haratak Int/Stanley and the 10 Sleepless Knights.

Christensen worked as a physician, then was the hospital’s medical director before becoming commissioner of Health from 1993 through 1994. She was elected delegate in 1996 and has served continuously in that post since January 1997.

Christensen joins a Democratic Party field that includes Lt. Gov. Greg Francis, who has not selected a running mate or formally announced, but has publicly acknowledged he plans to run and has held several campaign events. Former Lt. Gov. Gerard "Luz" James and St. Thomas consultant and former deputy commissioner of Human Services Moleto Smith Jr. have also tossed their hats in the Democratic Party ring.

Two independent candidates have also announced: State Command Sgt. Maj. Mona Barnes and former Territorial Court Judge Soraya Diase Coffelt.
