Police officers made a pair of arrests, including one for obtaining money under false pretenses and identity theft. Both arrests were made on St. Thomas, the V.I. Police Department announced Saturday.
Isaac Weston Piety, age 36, of St. John, was arrested and charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. Police said Piety defrauded his employer, Low Key Water Sports.
The initial investigation revealed that Piety received a pay check but told his employer that he was not paid. The employer issued him a second paycheck and Piety cashed both the checks, according to police.
He was arrested at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and his bail was set at $25,000.
In another arrest, Steven Vassel, age 54, was arrested on a warrant charging him with forgery and identify theft. Police said Vassel was an accountant with the New Testament Academy Mt. Zion Church and in November of 2008 he used a co-workers’ Social Security number, date of birth and other financial documents to obtain a loan to purchase a vehicle valued at $29,250.
He was arrested on Tuesday at about 10:30 p.m. and his bail was set at $10,000.
Both men were remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action. Their case continue to be followed up by the Criminal Investigation Bureau Detectives.
