St. Croix Man Charged with Assaulting Police

Marcos Bennett of Estate La Grande Princess was arrested Thursday after he allegedly struck an officer who stopped the vehicle he was operating because of an expired registration sticker, the V.I. Police Department said.

According to police, officers on patrol reported they saw a white Suzuki Sidekick with expired tags driving in the area of Five Corners in Christiansted about 5 p.m. Police said they indicated to the driver that he should stop the vehicle.

The driver, who was later identified as Bennett, attempted to hit the patrol car with his vehicle but the officer took evasive action and avoided the vehicle.

Bennett allegedly drove away and officers gave chase. Bennett eventually stopped the car and got out, the report said.

Police reported that when they approached Bennett, he punched the officers before he could be subdued and arrested.

Bennett was charged with third-degree assault and placed on $25,000 bail. He was remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
