Triathlon Parking, Road Closings and Restrictions

Sunday’s 2012 Half Ironman Triathlon on St. Croix means new parking and traffic restrictions along the route and other effected roads. The triathlon is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. with up to 800 athletes from all over the world competing, according to a Police Department news release.

Parking will be prohibited along the entire triathlon route between the hours of 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Officers will be assigned to ensure an unobstructed route during the event as well as to monitor traffic throughout the triathlon route.

Any vehicles parked along the triathlon route will be cited and towed at owner’s expense.

Vehicular traffic and pedestrians attempting to cross the triathlon route will be allowed to do so in a safe manner when feasible as long as the crossing does not interfere with or endanger the athletes.

Barricades will be used at the intersections that include Hospital Street and the Education Building; Hospital and Lobster Streets; East End Road and the entrance to the Lagoon; Queen and Queen Cross Streets; Queen and King Cross Streets; Queen and Prince Streets; Queen and Market Streets; Prince and Strand Streets; La Grande Princess and Honda; Melvin Evans Highway and Hope Road; and Melvin Evans and Scotia Bank at Diamond Ruby.

Traffic on East End Road (Rt. 82) will be allowed to travel only in a westerly direction toward Southgate Road (Rt. 60) to Sally’s Fancy Road (Rt. 624)for continued westerly travel on Southside Road (Rt. 62) only.

Traffic on the South Shore Road (Rt.60) will be allowed to travel only eastward to meet Rt. 62 for continued westerly travel.

The Police Department’s Marine Unit and a boat from the Planning and Natural Resources Department will monitor safety during the swimming competition. The officers will be assisted by emergency medical technicians in two boats.

Food and drink vendors will be open on Church Street in Christiansted. The Police Department issues all vendor permits and is responsible for vendor placement.
