Firearm, Neglect Charges After Kids Play With Loaded Gun

In the wake of an accidental shooting that injured a 3-year-old, a St. Croix man was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and child neglect.

Christian Rojas, 28, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. Thursday on a Superior Court warrant for leaving a loaded handgun in reach of a minor, a statement from police indicated.

Police said on Feb. 26 they were called to Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix to investigate a gunshot injury to a child that occurred at a residence in Estate Prosperity.

Police interviewed several people in the vicinity and determined that Rojas did not secure his unlicensed loaded firearm. A boy, also age 3, was able to get the weapon, and the gun fired, grazing the right side of the head of Rojas’ daughter.

Bail for Rojas was set at $25,000 which he was unable to post. Rojas remains in the custody of the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
