The public is invited to come out and join John Jackson, Samuel Rogers and the rest of the crew for a screening of December’s WBC title fights: 340 Boxing is bringing its popular “Fight Night: Vegas Style” event to St. Croix at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, being held in the boxers’ new gymnasium in Estate La Grande Princess, Christiansted, next to the St. Croix Women’s Coalition Building.
The gym, donated by St. Croix businessman and local boxing supporter Warren Mosler, will help bring the boxers’ popular afterschool program – founded by the territory’s own three-time world champion Julian “The Hawk” Jackson – to the big island. Now located on St. Thomas in the Paul M. Pearson Gardens Housing Community, the program not only trains students for physical competition, but works on instilling in them the discipline and life skills needed to succeed in both the academic and professional arenas. Under Jackson’s mentorship, the program has been able to produce a well-rounded and talented class of amateurs, along with a championship professional boxing team.
Numerous print and Internet biographies list Jackson as “one of the hardest pound-for-pound punchers in history.” His is also ranked 25th on “Ring Magazine’s” list of “100 Greatest Punchers of All-Time.”
The event will be followed by an autograph signing. This time around, V.I. professional boxer Julius Jackson will also be highlighted on the card in a WBA title fight.
