The V.I. Department of Education’s Division of Cultural Education has announced the winners of its first “Virgin Islands Personality”Essay Competition. Each participating student submitted an essay on a famous V.I. personality. In the St. Thomas-St. John District, the featured personality was Dr. Edward Wilmot Blyden, renowned educator, writer and diplomat. In the St. Croix District, the featured personality was Ansetta de Chabert, an accomplished business woman and political leader.
The winners are as follows:
St. Thomas-St. John District:
1st Place (270 points): Kyle Gonsalves of Charlotte Amalie High School
2nd Place (265 points): Tiffany Richards of Charlotte Amalie H.S.
3rd Place (260 Points): Chardonnay Tyson of Charlotte Amalie H.S.
St. Croix District:
1st Place (286 points): Jah-Healla Daniel of St. Croix Educational Complex
2nd Place (284 points): Thalia George of St. Croix Educational Complex
3rd Place (274 points): Raynyse Nesbitt of St. Croix Educational Complex
Assistant Director for the Cultural Education Division Gerard Emanuel said, “The division would like to thank all students who participated and all persons who assisted them in finalizing the essays. We again invite all other eligible middle, junior and senior high school students to participate in our March contest featuring Virgin Islands personalities: Myra Keating-Smith, in the St. Thomas-St. John School District, and Ulmont James in the St. Croix School District. We anticipate even greater participation in this month’s competition.”
