After a 5.3 magnitude earthquake Friday rattled Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and a 5.0 centered off St. Kitts shook St. John and Tortola on Thursday, a 3.6 earthquake was felt at 10:50 a.m. Saturday in the Virgin Islands.
Saturday’s earthquake was centered at 18.9 degrees north latitude and 64.6 degrees west longitude, or about 27 miles north northwest of Virgin Gorda. It happened 5.5 miles under the ocean floor.
There was no threat of a tsunami. No damages occurred.
Puerto Rico Seismic Network, which keeps track of earthquakes in the region, received no reports of the earthquake from the Virgin Islands. However, it was felt by at least one person in St. Thomas.
Harold Irizarry, a geologist at the seismic network, asked that people who feel earthquakes report them to the agency. Call 787-833-8433 or visit their website.
