Using Sport for Social Change Plans Essay Contest for Young Surfers

Using Sport for Social Change, in conjunction with Southland Gaming, The St. John Community Foundation, and the Parks and Recreation Department of St. Thomas and St. John announce an essay contest for local Virgin Islands surfers 17 years of age and younger.
Three boys and three girls from the St. Thomas area, and three boys and three girls from the St. John area will be selected from the essay contest and will win travel expenses to Tortola for the youth portion of the surf contest. This will include ferry passage and Tortola taxi to and from the event for each youth and one adult chaperone of their choice over the age of 18. Lunch and beverages for all will be provided to the winners and their chaperones throughout the day. Valid passports for each person are the responsibility of the participating parties. The dates of the Tortola surf competition are April 23, 24 and 25.
Essay contest rules:
* 1 entry per person
* Essay contestants must be 17 years and under
* Essay should have at the top:
* Title of essay
* First and last name
* Contact phone
* Your age and location
* Years of surfing experience
Essays should be from one to three pages in length, single or double spaced, at least 12 pt. and a readable font (Geneva, Times, etc.) An entry form with a parent signature must be received with the essay. The entry form can be found at: http://www.usingsportforsocialchange.com
* Essay topic: How can surfing improve the lives of the people of the Virgin Islands?
* Entrees must be received via U.S. mail or e-mail sent to one of the following address no later than
March 30.

Winners will be notified by phone no later than April 8. If an essay contest winner cannot be reached by that time, an alternate will be chosen to take his or her place. All decisions are final.
Surf Classic Information
The Tortola Surf Classic will be an open surf contest scheduled for Easter weekend (April 23 – 25). The location is to be announced closer to the date, but as of now, will be held at Bomba’s, Capoon’s Bay.
The divisions will be as follows:
Men’s Open
Women’s Open
Boys’ Open (under 18) One day only (TBD)
Girls’ Open (under 18) One day only (TBD)
Grommets (Under 12) One day only (TBD)
Masters Open (over 35)
Longboard Open (Minimum of 9’0" board, or 3′ overhead for kids)
