UVI Residence Hall to be Named in Honor of Delta M. Dorsch

The University of the Virgin Islands will name the residence hall complex on the St. Croix campus after longtime educator and cultural icon Delta M. Dorsch at a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The St. Croix campus residence hall complex will be renamed the Delta M. Jackson Dorsch Complex.

“To honor an educator who has given so much to this community is an act consistent with the University’s mission and vision,” said UVI President Dr. David Hall. "We will enshrine in these walls not only her name, but her spirit of excellence in education.”

Mrs. Dorsch, a native of Frederiksted, worked for more than 30 years as a teacher and supervisor in the Virgin Islands educational system. She served as the territory’s Deputy Commissioner for Curriculum and Instruction from 1977 until 1982 and also taught elementary education in undergraduate and graduate programs on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.

A member of the Commission on the Preservation of Virgin Islands Culture and of “Our Town, Frederiksted,” Mrs. Dorsch is a valued tradition bearer who has devoted her life to keeping interest in Virgin Islands culture alive. Using her gifts as a storyteller, Mrs. Dorsch has been a leader in the effort to protect Virgin Islands folk tales from extinction.

The residence hall complex on the St. Croix campus, at the head of Palm Drive, is made up of 15 three-bedroom suites. Following the renaming ceremony, a reception will take place in the Pavilion on the St. Croix campus.
