The V.I. Port Authority is postponing its scheduled Thursday evening meeting with the tenants of the Bournefield housing community until further notice.
The VIPA board voted last month to give the tenants four months to move out and the equivalent of six months’ rent to put towards a new place to live. The board’s concerns had to do with repeated flooding in the area, along with a sewage problem that they said has made many units on the back end of the Bournefield property a health hazard.
Thursday’s meeting was scheduled to allow the tenants to discuss their concerns and housing options but is being postponed to give VIPA more time to talk over the matter with the V.I. Housing Finance Authority and V.I. Housing Authority.
"We are still awaiting information from the housing authorities and therefore, we decided to postpone the meeting," VIPA Executive Director Kenn Hobson said in a press release. "Our goal is to have an informative and productive meeting with the tenants and provide them various options to assist them with relocation."
A new meeting date will be announced to the tenants and the media. Any questions can be directed to the Port Authority’s public relations office at (340) 774-1629, extension 6639 or info@viport.com.
