Health Alert: Recall Issued for Powder Infant Formula

Health Commissioner Julia Sheen on Thursday announced that Abbott Nutrition has recalled certain Similic brand powder formula for infants because of possible beetle contamination.
The recall is for certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers and also those offered in 8-, 12.4-, and 12.9-ounce cans.
According to the FDA, while the formulas containing the beetles pose no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of GI tract irritation.
“Parents should seek immediate care for their children, if they have these symptoms,” Sheen said.
Parents can find out if they are in possession of the Similac powder that has been recalled by calling (800) 986-8850 or by visiting www.similac.com/recall, and type in their lot number to determine if their product is affected.
Products with affected lot numbers can be returned to Abbott at no cost to the consumer. Both the company’s website and the consumer hotline have specific details on how to complete the return process.
The FDA said that no Abbott liquid infant formulas have been impacted.
Products not involved in the recall include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.
