Schooner Hosts Public Celebration for Its Return to St. Croix

The captain and crew of World Ocean School’s schooner, Roseway, has wrapped up its Summer Ambassador Program, which this year hosted students from St. Thomas for a 26-day expedition beginning in Boston, covering six ports in Nova Scotia, Canada, and ending in Portland, Maine.

Now with the students at home and back at school, Roseway prepares for her annual voyage from Boston to Bermuda and finally back to St. Croix. The schooner will arrive in her home port of Christiansted in early November.
To celebrate the return of St. Croix’s tall ship, World Ocean School will host a free dockside open boat celebration at the Port Authority dock in Gallows Bay beginning from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 15. All are welcome to join the festivities, which will include free tours of the ship, hot dogs, drinks, sweets and souvenirs. Those interested can also sign up for Roseway’s regularly scheduled sunset sail from 4-6:30 p.m.
World Ocean School has a busy season ahead that begins upon arrival with students from John Woodson Junior High School kicking off year three of the Roseway program, which will serve 700 students from all three public junior high schools, funded in part by the V.I. Department of Education.
Roseway will also continue offering activities that help raise funds for the winter programs, including sunset sails for locals and visitors as well as contracted sails with the cruise lines over the holidays. It will also be available for holiday parties and events, and as always, part of the cost is a tax-deductible donation to the World Ocean School.
In between all of this, private school and youth organization programs will be accommodated as the school hopes to make room for more students this season. As part of this endeavor, it will host a Holiday Tall Ship Sailing Camp from Jan. 4-8 in the mornings for local students to come sail the schoonerduring the school vacation. Students will learn about schooner sailing, plotting courses, the physics of sail and the traditional life of a sailor.
