Historical Society Will Conduct Hike

The St. John Historical Society will explore the historic Sieben-Mollendall Estates beginning at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 15. Historian David Knight will lead an exploration of the numerous historic sites along the old Sieben-Mollendahl Road. Along the way, the group will visit the ruins of a grand 19th century estate house, the sprawling remains of an 18th century sugar plantation, and scattered vestiges of a post-emancipation community of artisans and bay-leaf pickers.
While most of the road is fairly open, the group should come prepared for frequent side trips into dense bush, so long sleeves and pants are recommended. Participants should bring plenty of water, some snacks and bug spray. This will be more than a four-hour trek. All are welcome.
The hike will begin at L'Eesperance Road where it intersects Centerline Road, in Catherineberg. Parking here is limited. Additional parking can be found on the straightaway west of this point near the Centerline/John Head Road intersection. Car-pooling is strongly advised. All are welcome!
