Victim Advocate Training to Begin

Oct. 11, 2007 – The Women’s Coalition has scheduled its Victim Advocate Training Program to run from Tuesday, Oct. 23, through Thursday, Nov. 29. The classes will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. This is a comprehensive six-week training for potential advocates and a great refresher for existing advocates.
At present, Women’s Coalition has approximately 60 advocates who volunteer their time and understanding to help victims of abuse, rape and child sexual assault, responding to crisis calls from the hospital and police commands.
The training is open to both men and women. Volunteers should be over 18 and be available for a screening interview. In addition, each volunteer should have access to transportation, must sign a pledge of confidentiality (particularly regarding information relating to victims) and attend all training sessions. They must also be willing to make a one-year commitment of participation. An advocate is required to be on duty at least once per month. This means being on call during one day of the weekend or from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., on a weekday.
An advocate trainee must be a good listener, provide moral support, empathy and understanding, and learn about the issues surrounding violence and sexual assault. Volunteers do not need any previous counseling experience or psychology course credits. Session topics include crisis intervention skills, the meaning of domestic violence and rape, the medical aspects of these crimes and the role of law enforcement.
Spanish speakers are urged to apply. All trainees who become group co-leaders will be paid for their work. Support groups meet once a week for six-month periods.
For more information or to register, call 773-9272. Applications are available at the Women’s Coalition office/crisis center, 7 East Street, Christiansted, and on the Web site: www.wcstx.com.
