Agriculture's Urban and Community Forestry Offers Grants

Oct. 11, 2007 – The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, Urban and Community Forestry (U&CF) Assistance Program announces the availability of grants for the 2007 Challenge Cost-Share program. Non-profit organizations, neighborhood associations, territorial government agencies and educational institutions operating within the U.S.V.I. may apply for a grant. Grants require a 50-50 match to the amount requested from applicants. Awards will be allocated on a competitive basis until all funds are exhausted. The deadline for proposal submissions is Nov. 2.
The primary goal of the program is to encourage citizen involvement in creating and supporting long-term and sustainable U&CF programs throughout the territory. Urban forestry activities include all of the practices undertaken by community members to plan for and ensure the conservation of existing native species as well as the establishment, maintenance and protection of trees, green spaces and related natural resources within our urban settings.
Proposal packets can be obtained at the VIDOA on St. Croix or via the Internet at www.viucf.org.
