Humane Society to Hold Artists for Animals Fundraiser
The Humane Society of St. Thomas will hold its first annual Artists for Animals fundraiser from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Oceana Restaurant & Wine Bar. Local artist Caroll Sirhakis will be the featured artist, with 75 percent of her art sale proceeds going to the Humane Society. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Patricia LaCorte and there will be a cash bar. LaCorte has also offered to give the Humane Society 10 percent of the proceeds from the dinners that are served that evening.
Sirhakis has been a resident of St. Thomas for more than 30 years and has changed the direction of her art. She creates her works with found natural materials, and she has discovered a new and exciting form of personal expression. "Each piece was once a living thing," she said. "Each speaks with its own color and texture, and each piece is still determined to show the value of its life." Her balcony is filled with pieces of coral, driftwood, fungi, seeds and pods, drying and bleaching in the sun. All will be turned into scenes that grab the eye and stimulate the imagination. They are turned into people, landscapes and vistas. She has allowed these collections to tell their own story.
