Brief: BVI, USVI to Mark 35th Anniversary of Friendship Day Oct. 20

Sept. 29, 2007 — Gov. John deJongh Jr. and First Lady Cecile deJongh will host the 35th anniversary celebration of BVI/USVI Friendship Day on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event is being planned by a committee led by David Edgecombe, special assistant to the governor for external affairs.
Edgecombe said Friday the planning is in full swing. The theme of the celebration is “BVI / USVI Friendship: Progress for All Through Collaboration” and at the core of Friendship Day 2007 is a representative exhibition of the goods and services produced in the Virgin Islands.
“The aim is to create greater awareness of these enterprises; drum up more business for them; encourage more trade between the islands; seek out opportunities for investments and joint ventures; and use emerging technology to reach a world market,” Edgecombe said. There will be cultural performances, culinary displays and a cook-off between the best chefs from the British and U.S. islands.
“John and I are looking forward to hosting Premier Ralph O’Neal, the official BVI delegation, and the many family and friends who are expected to attend from the BVI,” Cecile deJongh said Friday. Those interested in exhibiting or in volunteering at the celebration are asked to call Ruthlyn White at the Office of the Governor, 693-4313.
