Third FUVI Celebrity Golf Classic Set for June 28-July 1 on St. Croix
The third annual Celebrity Golf Classic sponsored by the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands (FUVI) has been scheduled for June 28 through July 1 at the Carambola Golf and Country Club on St. Croix. The classic will employ its signature mix of youth sports clinics on June 28 and 29 and the Golf Classic, where celebrities team with local golfers on tournament day, on Saturday, June 30. For the first time, the 2007 event will include youth sports clinics on UVI's St. Thomas campus, as well as clinics on the St. Croix campus and at the Carambola. UVI Carnival Troupe Signup Extended to Thursday, April 26
The deadline to sign up for UVI's 2007 Carnival troupe has been extended through Thursday, April 26. The entire University community is encouraged to participate. An online registration form and views of the costumes are available from a link on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu. Volunteers are being sought to assist with the troupe effort. Also, the UVI Spirit Squad is practicing the dance routine to be used by the UVI troupe each weekday from 7 to 9 p.m. through Thursday, April 26, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Deal Offered to St. Croix Students Who Join UVI Carnival Troupe
Free room and board, and round-trip ferry transportation for a limited number of St. Croix campus students who wish to join the troupe is offered by the Student Activities Office, the Student Government Association and the Campus Executive Administrator's (CEA) Office. Students will have to pay for their costumes and provide a $50 travel deposit (to be refunded if students actually participate in the troupe). This special offer is available for up to 15 students. Sign-up is at the CEA's office. For details, call 692-4188.
UVI to Close April 27-29 for Carnival; Final Exams Slated for April 30-May 5
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed for Carnival recess from Friday, April 27, through Sunday, April 29. The last day of UVI's 2007 spring semester classes is April 26. UVI administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Monday, May 30. Spring semester exams are scheduled from April 30 through May 5.
Graduating UVI Seniors Sought for Collegiate Learning Assessment
UVI seniors who will graduate in May are being recruited to participate in the Collegiate Learning Assessment, a test organized by the Council for Aid to Education, a national, nonprofit organization. Tests will be administered through Sunday, April 29, on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Cash awards of $300 for participants who score above 75 percent and of $100 for those scoring from 50 to 74 percent will be awarded. April Edition of Dateline: UVI Features Miss UVI; SOS Program
The April edition of the monthly newsletter Dateline UVI, features a look at Sharifa Malony, who was crowned Miss UVI on March 24. Also covered are the successful, student-organized Shadow Our Students program and the work of UVI's own sea turtle expert, Kemit-Amon Lewis. 2007 Miss UVI Competition Videos Offered by Student Government
The Student Government Association on the St. Thomas campus has placed on sale a limited number of videos (in DVD format) of the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition on March 24. The DVDs will be available for $15 each at the Student Activities Center. Call 693-1110 for more information.
Memorial Service Set May 5 for Former St. Croix Campus Director Dr. Mary Savage
A memorial service for Dr. Mary M. Savage, a UVI retiree and the former St. Croix Campus Director, who passed away last fall, has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the Sacred Heart Chapel in the LBJ Housing Community on St. Croix. Her husband Tom Savage, a UVI adjunct instructor for 25 years, will be in attendance. For more information, contact David Capriola 692-4156.
UVI Concert Band to Present 'Ladies Night Out' on May 5
The UVI Concert Band will perform a "Ladies Night Out" concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at Christchurch Methodist Church at the Market Square in Charlotte Amalie. The band will be conducted by Prof. Austin A. Venzen. Special guest performers include the Superior Court Rising Girls, the UVI Women's Chorus, the Cavalry Baptist Lady Trio and the New Herrnhut Women's Chorus. Individual performers include Na'Kaya Esdaille, Camila Daniels, Portia Norkaitis, Eugenia Chapman, Detra Davis, Prof. Violeta Donovan and Marilyn Malone. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Ticket are available from UVI Concert Band members and from these outlets: the UVI Bookstore, the UVI Humanities Office and Nora's Beauty Palace.
