Dear Source:
My response to your story about the Grand opening.
Long before The Hurricane in 1995 Yacht Haven had the location in St Thomas. A place to be home to yachts of all sizes. One of the most fun restaurants, The Bridge, and a fleet of charter boats to entertain the locals, the cruise ship cruisers and hotel guests.
Then came the whole 1995 hurricane season and at the end St. Thomas had had a major "hurtin' " put on it. The island had been defoliated. The cruise ships had almost stopped coming, the hotels were just beginning to host tourists, and the winter season was just beginning. Unfortunately what had been Yacht Haven had been destroyed. Broken windows and roofs that leaked. Over the following months the dregs of society found rooms for free in what became, for the next 11 years, known as Rat Haven.
Potential buyers came and went and nothing changed except deterioration.
Now there is real hope in the future of this prime property. It is about time!! Let us now pray that the residents in the area will get a new attitude about their neighborhood! Maybe there will be fewer gunshots and junked cars. Maybe the law and order will increase and the negative image of the area will turn positive.
If the future of St Thomas is to continue to improve there are certain times the island must continue to REMEMBER. Otherwise the island will again face a bleak one.
