Wide-scale Power Interruption Scheduled for Sunday

March 23, 2007 — The V.I. Water and Power Authority is advising its St. Croix electrical customers on Feeder Nos. 8, 9 and 10 that there will be a scheduled service interruption on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m, according to a WAPA release issued Friday.
Areas affected on Feeder No. 8 include the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport, Enfield Green, Sunshine Mall, Campo Rico, Estate Carlton, Hannah’s Rest, La Grange, Frederiksted Town and surrounding areas.
Feeder No. 9 areas include Clifton Hill, Adventure, St. George, Castle Burke, Lower Love, UVI, Kingshill, Orange Grove, Peter’s Rest and surrounding areas.
Feeder No. 10 includes Carambola, Grove Place, Mahogany Road , Estate St. John, LaGrande Princess, and surrounding areas.
The outage will allow WAPA personnel to perform annual preventive maintenance on the 24.9KV substation system.
According to Kevin Smalls, St. Croix power plant superintendent, the substation is the facility where WAPA’s transmission voltage is adjusted for distribution to homes and businesses. “This maintenance work is essential in an effort to maximize the reliability of the system, Smalls said.
During the outage, maintenance personnel will clean insulators and gang switches, service transformers and transformer breakers and lubricate the inner workings of the equipment in the substation. The service interruption is to ensure the safety of the technicians while the work is under way.
