Nov. 30, 2005 – The man wanted in connection with the murder of David Geiger is back on U.S. soil after turning himself in to British authorities on Tortola Sunday.
Renell Lettsome who is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, first-degree assault, third degree assault, arson, and use of a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime of violence in a warrant issued last week, allegedly bludgeoned Geiger to death and then set his body on fire. He also is accused of attempting to kill Geiger's 14-year-old son Nathan.
Lettsome was arrested at 5:36 p.m. "after arriving on U.S. soil," Sgt. Thomas Hannah, Police spokesman, said Wednesday evening.
Members of the VI Police Department Major Crime Unit and an attorney from the V.I. Justice Department went to the BVI Tuesday to arrange for Lettsome's extradition.
Hannah said there was no problem getting Lettsome back. "We have a good working relationship with the BVI," he said, adding, "the fact that he [Lettsome] turned himself in was a plus."
He is being held pending an advice of rights hearing Thursday morning.
At the time the warrant for his arrest was announced Police Commissioner Elton Lewis said Superior Court Judge Audrey Thomas had set bail at $1 million should Lettsome be captured.
