Virgin Islanders Raise More than $1.7 Million for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Nov. 30, 2005 – Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards and American Red Cross Executive Director Jane Wherren announced Wednesday that Virgin Islanders have donated a total of $1,727,238 to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
According to Wherren, the donations came from a combination of businesses, organizations, schools and individuals. The funds were collected through the local chapter of the American Red Cross, the 1-800-HELP-NOW hotline, and through the Internet. Wherren said the total figure was reported to her by the national headquarters.
"We are very pleased with the great generosity shown by residents of this territory to those severely affected by Hurricane Katrina," Wherren said. "I would also like to thank Lt. Gov. Richards for his enthusiastic support and for leading the territory-wide fund-raising drive. We are very grateful to him and to all Virgin Islanders that contributed."
Richards said, in a press release, that he is overwhelmed by the outpouring of donations from the Virgin Islands. He thanked each individual, business and organization that gave.
Richards urged those who have not yet donated to give because it it will take years to rebuild some areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
