DEVIL RAYS WIN TOURNEY WITHOUT LIFTING A BAT

May 12, 2002 – The Ivanna Eudora Kean Devil Rays did not even have to break a sweat or even swing the bat on the final day of the St. Thomas-St. Croix Baseball Challenge on Sunday at the Michael J. Kirwan Terrace Ballfield to win the tournament.
The Devil Rays won two games by forfeit. The first game against the Antilles Hurricanes was decided early when the Hurricanes conceded the game from the night before. The Educational Complex Barracudas won game two over the Good Hope Falcons, 3-1. The Charlotte Amalie High School Chicken Hawks then failed to show up at game time giving the Devil Rays the tournament championship.
The game between the Chicken Hawks and the Devil Rays was rescheduled from 2 p.m. to 12 noon, however, when the game was called at 1 p.m. the Chicken Hawks only had a handful of players. St. Thomas/St. John Interscholastic Athletic Association baseball commissioner, Neville Amey, was really disappointed with the day’s events. "In tournaments games sometimes have to be rescheduled and all of the teams were told in advance of schedule changes," Amey said.
The Barracudas salvaged a win for the tournament in beating the Falcons in the only game played for the day. Both teams had six hits a piece. The Barracudas played errorless ball, while the Falcons committed two errors.
Carl Joseph picked up the win for the Barracudas and his teammate, Collin Williams got the save. Christian Brady suffered the lost for the Falcons.
Darnell Hendrickson accounted for half of the Barracudas hits in going three for three from the plate. Nick Colabella and Dustin Lowery each had two hits in two at bats for the Falcons. Lowery also drove home the Falcons only run.
The Devil Rays and the Chicken Hawks both finished the tournament, 3-1. The Devil Rays won the tie breaker due to the forfeit victory over the Chicken Hawks. The Hurricanes had a 2-2 record, while both St. Croix district teams finished the tournament with a record of 1-3.
