NEW PHOTO PLATES TO BENEFIT NATIONAL PARK

A new Virgin Islands license plate featuring a color photograph of St. John's Trunk Bay is now available, with most of the cost donated to Friends of Virgin Islands National Park.
Personalized plates with up to seven numbers or letters go for $105, and serially numbered plates beginning with "P-1" for "park" can be obtained for $55; all but $15 of the price of each is normally tax-deductible, depending on an individual's tax status.
St. Thomas photographer Don Hebert authored the shot of Trunk Bay adorning the plates. Trudy Toliver, Friends of the V.I. Park development director, pointed out that the plates can also be used as a souvenir or gift for visitors.
Order forms for the special plates can be found at the Motor Vehicles Bureau on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John and at Connections on St. John; and from the Friends Web site at www.friendsvinp.org . They can also be ordered by calling 779-4940.
"Once they fill out an order form, they send it with their payment to the Friends," Toliver said. "We order the plates and send them back to their new owners. If they want to legally put the plates on their car, they need to take their new plates, their old plates, their registration and insurance information to the Motor Vehicles office for registrations."
The nonprofit Friends of the V.I. National Park raises funds for such park projects as the Taino archeological dig at Cinammon Bay, the Folklife Festival and cultural demonstrations at Annaberg Plantation, coral reef restoration and research and land acquisition for the park.
For more information, call the Friends at 779-4940.
