Finance Committee Chairwoman Lorraine Berry has subpoenaed 20 employees of the Bureau of Internal Revenue to expose shortfalls in the agency charged with collecting money owed the government.
Included in the list of subpoenaed IRB workers is director Claudette Farrington, 12 employees from St. Thomas and seven from St. Croix. Berry said the decision to order the 20 employees to testify was a directive of the Finance Committee’s majority.
"The directive to subpoena calls for testimony exposing management and operational deficiencies of the Bureau," Berry said in a release Wednesday.
She said emphasis will be placed on IRB’s collection efforts, "the lack of which adversely impacts on the revenue stream of the Virgin Islands government and its operational budget."
The subpoenaed IRB employees will appear at the next Finance Committee meeting scheduled for July 6 in the Senate chambers on St. Thomas.
