“The Taste of Things”
A magnificent culinary romance from the French-Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung.”
New York Times Review:
“In a phenomenological way, ‘The Taste of Things’ captures the joy of variety injected into mere existence: savory and sweet, hot and sour, juice and cream, and astringency are not required for pure subsistence, but the rich range of taste we have created in our daily meals says something about human longings not easily put into words. This mystery, like love, is hard to parse: Though we know loss is entwined with the feast, we choose to savor it anyhow.”

”Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project”

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize
Sundance Film Festival –
Winner: Grand Jury Prize
(Duration: 1 hour 42 minutes)
“Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” is a 2023 documentary film directed by Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson. It explores the life and career of American poet Nikki Giovanni.
It had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival on January 20, and it was released in a limited release on November 3 by HBO Documentary Films prior to its broadcast on HBO on January 8, 2024.
The film covers American poet Nikki Giovanni’s life and the historical periods she lived through from the civil rights movement and Black Arts Movement to Black Lives Matter. It is narrated by actress Taraji P. Henson.
I’m still thinking about “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” weeks after having seen it. The film itself is a poem about poetry, time, space and speaking truth. It effortlessly travels through different phases of Giovanni’s life, creating a rich, full portrait that doesn’t shy away from controversy.
I now get why Giovanni says black women are the ideal explorers to send to Mars, in a way that I didn’t understand by reading her words. Keep a look out for this film, hopefully coming to a theater near you! The visuals, music and readings all transport you to Giovanni’s world. It’s an exhilarating place to be.
