VIWMA Updates Seaweed Acceptance Schedule for Bovoni Landfill

The decomposing seaweed has worked its way into the Red Hook lagoon on St. Thomas.
The decomposing seaweed has worked its way into the Red Hook lagoon on St. Thomas.

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority advises the public that effective immediately, seaweed will be accepted at the Bovoni Landfill only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Please adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. All haulers should notify the scale house attendant that they are planning to dispose of seaweed upon entering the landfill.
  2. Loads will be accepted at the back of the Bovoni Landfill by the western berm facing Bolongo Bay: Utilize the old access road. Drive up to the top, veer to the left, go around the hill then proceed down the hill to the western berm.
  3. Trucks are expected to turn around then reverse and off-load.
  4. Seaweed needs to be dewatered prior to disposal.
  5. Everyone is asked to use caution when traversing the landfill.

This change in schedule will allow for a longer period to dewater the seaweed before bringing it to the landfill.
