Nicholas D’Amour of St. Thomas shot a personal best 672 in the second stage of the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup in the Olympic Capital, Lausanne, Switzerland. This Stage of the World Cup is being hosted at the World Archery Excellence Centre.
A total of 234 archers from the national teams of the following 35 countries registered for this tournament: Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malawi, Moldova, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the USA and the U.S. Virgin Islands. 80 of the best archers in the world started in the Men’s Olympic Recurve Division.
During the Qualification Round, Italy’s European Games Champion Mauro Nespoli took top seed after recurve men’s qualification. It is the 33-year-old’s second-best score in an impressive international career to date and only two points off his personal record.
The reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion Brady Ellison came in second with 686 points; Sjef Van den Berg was third on 683. Erdem Tsydypov, Mete Gazoz, Florian Unruh, Alessandro Paoli and Nicholas D’Amour completed the top eight seeds and will receive byes into the third round.
D’Amour was pushing Nespoli for the lead at the halfway point but had a slight set back over the back 36, needing to beat Steve Wijler in a shoot-off to retain his bye after the pair tied on 672.
Competition continues with eliminations for all recurve men on Wednesday, May 19, in Lausanne.
