Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest for Gun Possession

At about 8:21 p.m. Saturday, officers of the Special Operations Bureau on St. Croix arrested D’Andre Gumbs, age 21 of Strawberry Hill, after a traffic stop and charged him with unauthorized possession of a firearm.

During a traffic stop in Estate Work & Rest, officers observed a firearm in a vehicle operated by Gumbs. Gumbs does not have a license to possess, carry, or own a firearm in the U.S. Virgin Islands, police said, and was arrested as a result.

Bail for Gumbs was set at $50,000. Unable to post bail, he was turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of rights hearing.

St. Croix District Chief of Police Sidney Elskoe commended the officers of the Special Operations Bureau, led by Commander Capt. Dennis Vanterpool, for the discovery of the firearm and the subsequent arrest.

“We intend to keep up the pressure on those persons who want to illegally possess firearms. We will take those guns and arrest those persons when we find them,” Elskoe said. He urge the community to contact the VIPD with information on crimes by calling 911, the Crime TipLine at 340-778-4950, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477 (1-800-222-TIPS).
