Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement regarding an important $1 million grant for the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) from FEMA to go towards the rebuilding of the U.S. Virgin Islands associated with Hurricane Maria:
“Today, I am pleased to announce a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA]. The grant is for $1,059,276.24 in federal funding to the Virgin Islands Department of Education. This award provides federal funding for emergency protective measures. Emergency protective measures are temporary measures taken against an incident. Emergency protective measures are actions taken before, during and after an incident to save lives, protect public health and safety and prevent damage to improved public and private property.
“This important grant will benefit the Virgin Islands tremendously with our ongoing rebuilding efforts and making the Virgin Islands whole again after experiencing two devastating hurricanes. The United States Government and the international community has an obligation to work with the affected local governments to restore infrastructure, provide critical humanitarian assistance and help rebuild our islands.”
