Army Corps of Engineers to Host Public Meeting on Savan Gut Project

Staff Sgt. Jerry Hoover of the Army Corps of Engineers, a pre-installation inspection team member with the 249th Engineer Battalion, assesses a Cotton Valley Fire Department generator with a facility staff member in St. Croix.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, will host a public meeting for the Savan Gut Phase II Project on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Interested residents are invited to attend the meeting from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, at Bethania Hall in Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church at 5057 Norre Gade, St. Thomas.

Commissioner Nelson Petty Jr. and the V.I. Department of Public Works, the project’s non-federal sponsor, will be in attendance.

The purpose of the project, authorized under Section 205 of the Flood Risk Reduction Continuing Authorities Program, is to reduce flood damages to the Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School and the Central Business District in Charlotte Amalie.

A previous study conducted by the Corps recommended a plan that included the construction of a 2,300-foot covered channel from St. Thomas Harbor to and around the Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School, replacement of three highway bridges, construction of the velocity check dam, and construction of a floating debris barrier at the velocity check dam.

The Corps received additional funding under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 to complete an addendum to the previous study confirming the engineering, environmental and economic aspects of the project.

The Corps believes this study will benefit from public involvement and encourages participation in the National Environmental Policy Act process.
