Program Organizers Invited to St. John Summer Youth Fair

Organizations with summer youth programs on St. John are invited to let parents know about them at a Summer Youth Fair to be held May 7 at Julius E. Sprauve School. It will be held in conjunction with the school’s Parent Teacher Organization meeting.

“Parents from all over the island are invited,” said Linda Beckstein, chairwoman of the island’s Community Integration Team.

The summer youth fair, sponsored by CIT and the Police Department, was initially organized five years ago because someone erroneously complained that there were no structured activities during the summer for St. John youths. The island actually had and has many activities but organizers faced challenges in letting parents know about them.

At the fair, representatives from the organizations will take a turn at the microphone to explain their programs, Beckstein said.

“It’s one-stop shopping for parents to find a productive experience,” Police Department spokesman Melody Rames said.

She and Beckstein expect representatives for organizations that provide activities as well as jobs to attend.

Rames said at past fairs, organizations such as the V.I. National Park, V.I. Environmental Resource Station, Sisterhood Agenda, Gifft Hill School, and the Departments of Sports, Parks and Recreation; Labor; and Police participated.

To be included in the fair, organization representatives should email Rames at mrames@vipd.gov.vi.
