Winter Storm on Mainland Causes More Flight Cancellations

As Winter Storm Pax continued to cut a swath through the southeast United States and, soon affecting the northeast, more airlines were forced to cancel flights to the Virgin Islands.

V.I. Port Authority spokesman Monifa Marrero said that, as of late Wednesday afternoon, JetBlue’s Wednesday flight from Boston to Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and the return flight were canceled.

According to JetBlue’s website, customers may rebook their flights for travel through Tuesday prior to the departure of their originally scheduled flight. Customers with canceled flights may also opt for a refund.

Delta canceled its flights from Atlanta to and from St. Thomas for Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, Delta canceled its 5:50 p.m. flight from Cyril E. King Airport to Atlanta.

The airline said on its website that passengers on flights scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday must rebook and fly by Monday. Those holding tickets on Friday’s flights must rebook and fly by Tuesday.

Marrero said the American flight from JFK International Airport in New York was not yet canceled. However, American said on its website that passengers flying from JFK and other northeast airports could change their flights at no charge. If they held tickets for Thursday or Friday, they must travel by Feb. 19.

The American flight from Miami was expected to arrive. Winter storm Pax bypassed that airport.

Additionally Marrero said U.S. Airways’ flight from Charlotte, N.C., and United Airline’s flight from Washington, D.C., were still scheduled to arrive.

According to the Weather Channel, snow was expected to start falling in the D.C. area early Wednesday evening. Snow accumulations of anywhere from an inch to 10 inches are expected depending on location. Ice hit areas as far west as Texas.

Thousands of flights were already canceled with more expected as the storm heads northeast.

Tourism Department spokesman Luana Smith said Tuesday when Delta canceled its flights to and from Atlanta that the department was ready to assist if needed.

Robert O’Connor Jr., who owns O’Connor Car Rental on St. John, echoed those of hoteliers who said Tuesday that they aren’t experiencing any great issues with delayed departures and arrivals.

“I haven’t noticed any great problem,” he said.
