Emergency road repairs continued across portions of St. Thomas this week. The nighttime work is being done to bring relief to motorists who have been driving on rain damaged roads across the island for some time. Recent heavy rains have further damaged roadways in some areas.
Commissioner Darryl Smalls said today that Better Roads Asphalt Corporation had begun repairs to St. Thomas Route 30 on Monday. Milling of the road surface damaged by torrential rains began along Route 30 on the waterfront adjacent to the Ron de Lugo Federal Building and continued west to the USO building intersection, according to a press release issued on Wednesday by the V.I. Department of Public Works.
Work was expected to resume tonight, Dec. 18, with the milling operation continuing westbound on Route 30 along the waterfront, seaplane terminal, Frenchtown and down Moravian Highway to the Sub Base intersection. The milled areas will be resurfaced with hot asphalt mix.
Additionally, the contractor has commenced repairs to the eastern end of the island. The contractor has milled and repaired many of the extensively damaged areas of the roadway along Route 38, Emile Francis Memorial Drive, continuing north and west along Route 42 within the Tabor and Harmony area and Route 40 along the Donoe bypass. The contractor is expected to continue deep patch repairs, milling and overlays.
V.I. Department of Public Works crews have been also supplementing the repair workforce by addressing areas of the roadway on Brookman Road, Scottfree, Harwood Highway and west of the airport road entrance.
