SBDC Offers Workshops on DOT’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Program The V.I. Small Business Development Center will host luncheons to present information on the Department of Transportation’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) program on St. Croix, on Jan. 15, and St. Thomas on Jan. 16. The luncheon – titled "What’s In It for Me?" – will feature an overview of the DBE program, which is instrumental in the award and administration of federally-funded contracts for highway and transit projects in the VI Department of Public Works, and financial assistance for airport programs of the VI Port Authority. The St. Croix session runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan 15, at the SBDC Training Facility at the Sion Farm Shopping Center. The St. Thomas session is slated for noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center.

Public Observing Session at Etelman Observatory Slated for Jan. 18 A public observing session at UVI’s Etelman Observatory is scheduled for 7:30-10:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. The observatory is home to the Virgin Islands Robotic Telescope (VIRT). Observatory Director Dr. David Morris, said guests will be treated to views of the planet Jupiter, with its Galilean moons, and the Orion Nebula star forming region. "We are pleased to invite the public to join us and enjoy the night sky, views of our galaxy, and a discussion of interesting and exciting topics in the world of Astrophysics and Space Science," Morris said. The event is free, through charitable sponsorship offered by Celtic Therapeutics. Space is limited. And due to limited parking at the observatory, shuttle service from Sibilly School will be arranged. St. Croix Students, Faculty and Staff Invited to Join in Martin Luther King Jr. March on Jan. 21 The UVI Student Activities Office on St. Croix invites faculty, staff and students to participate in its parade entry in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. March on Monday, Jan. 21. The parade is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Central Labor Council. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon, starting at the Claude O. Markoe Elementary School and moving to Buddhoe Park in Frederiksted. Free T-shirts will be presented to the first 20 students to register. Round-trip transportation will be provided from the campus. Commissioning Ceremony Set for Senior Cadet Khalid Matthew on Jan. 23 on St. Croix The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program on the Albert A. Sheen Campus invites members of the UVI community to the commissioning ceremony for Khalid D. Matthew on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The ceremony will take place in the Great Hall at 1 p.m. Cadet Matthew recently completed a BA degree in business administration. UVI President Dr. David Hall will represent the University. Lieutenant Colonel Daniel McCray will preside over the swearing in and serve as the day’s guest speaker. McCray is the ROTC Regional Commander, based at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. National Student Exchange Program Applications Now Available; Deadline Jan. 31 Now is the time for UVI students considering participation in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program in academic year 2013-2014 to complete and return NSE application forms. The deadline for applications is Thursday, Jan. 31. Applications are available from the Counseling and Placement Center located in Rouppe House (along with Student Housing) on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 721 on the Albert A.
