Police on Monday released the name of the man who died of gunshot wounds while driving on Queen Mary Highway near East Airport Road. Kai J. Gumbs, 28, died at the scene Sunday. A 25-year-old passenger who was also in the car was struck by bullets but is being treated at the Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Police said that on Sunday, an unidentified vehicle travelling east on the same road approached Gumbs’ Toyota from behind and passed it on the right. As the vehicle passed, shots were fired at the Toyota striking the two occupants.
St. Croix Chief of Police Christopher Howell emphasized that this and other recent shootings are not random acts of violence and robbery is not believed to be a motive. He said detectives are investigating the similarities and connections among these recent criminal acts that seem to have common threads.
