Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge Book Blow Out Event Set

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. will host a “Book Blow Out” event for students in grades kindergarten to sixth grade in Cruz Bay, St. John on Sunday, June 26. Books will be distributed through the governor’s Summer Reading Challenge from 1 – 4 p.m. in front of the Battery. Companion “Book Blow Out” events were previously held on St. Thomas and St. Croix earlier this month.
“I encourage all eligible St. John students to participate in this year’s reading challenge and read five or more books this summer. Reading is an important part of a daily routine that enables students to increase vocabulary and overall learning. I look forward to congratulating all the young readers of this exciting program at special events later this summer,” Governor de Jongh said.
As an incentive to participate in the initiative, students who keep track of their reading and finish a minimum of five books will be invited to a “Fun Day” with the governor in recognition of student achievement.
Reading Challenge participants on St. Thomas who were not able to pick up their books at the Tutu Park Mall “Book Blow Out” last Saturday may do so this Sunday, June 26, at the Summer Reading Challenge display in front of the Battery.
The Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge is a partnership of the Office of the Governor, the Department of Education, the Virgin Islands Public Libraries, and Learn-It Systems Corporation. Thanks and appreciation are also extended to this year’s key sponsors: TV 2 and Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
