Winners of Battle of the Books Competition Announced

The results of 2010-2011 Battle of the Books competition in the St. Thomas-St. John district have been announced. Student teams participated at the elementary and junior high levels. At the beginning of the school year, they began reading the same seven books based on their grade level. Nearing the end of the school year, the teams were quizzed on the selected books. Teams answering the most questions were declared the winners.
Nancy Christie, coordinator of District Media Library Services and the Battle of the Books event, was pleased by the high level of participation. “The competition was a close one,” she said of the junior high level contest. “One point separated the first place and second place winners; the coaches and students deserve kudos for a job well done.”
The 2010-2011 Battle of the Books results are as follows:
Junior High Level
First Place: V.I. Montessori School & International Academy
Team members are Alana Davis, Shakima Esprit, Nicholas Figueroa, Khalese Potter and Imani Sidiropoulos. The coach/ librarian is Kathy Schlesinger
Second Place: Addelita Cancryn Jr. High School
Team members are Kobe Sutton, Anthony Lin, Brent Peter, Kijana James, Yara Matthew Pollack and Naviyah Davis. The coach/librarian is Maribeth Aguila.
Third Place: Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School
Team members are Muhammad Ali, Jessica Matthias, Isabel Setorie, Marie-Julie Labardy, Myles Todman and Shabree Todman. The coach/librarian is Jenifer Canezal.
Elementary Level
First Place: Leonard Dober Elementary School
Team members are Jahmira Rogers, Hillori Norford, M’Kayla Mike, Khaliyah Clarke and Na’Kaya Esdaille.
Coach: Melody Haynes.
Second Place: Gladys A. Abraham Elementary School
Team members: Tamariah Prevost, Shakil Persad, Danae Holland, Oliver Delos Santos, Kiwanee Smith, and Danielle Taylor. Coach: Marilyn Brissett.
Third Place: Lockhart Elementary School
Team members: Jordan Bedminister, Jalen Francis, Naseem Jamil, Navine Jamil, Alex Rivera and D’Andre Young.
The coach is Merle Vanterpool.
“It was a pleasure to see the students compete in this literacy improvement activity,” Christie said of the competition. “Congratulations to all the competitors and their coaches.” The competition was opened to elementary and junior high school students in public, private and parochial schools.
