Driver Shot and Killed on Queen Mary Highway

A 29-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday while driving east on Queen Mary Highway, according to the V.I. Police Department.

According to a statement from the VIPD, the victim, who was later identified as Omaya Leftewe, was driving alone near Estate Castle Burke when another vehicle with at least one passenger inside pulled alongside his car and shot at it.

Leftewe attempted to evade the shooter and turned left on to East Airport Road where he crashed into a fence. Police and emergency medical technicians arrived at the scene and transported him to Gov. Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

It was the second homicide of the year on St. Croix, the sixth in the territory.

Criminal Investigation and Major Crime Bureau detectives are investigating, and urge anyone who knows anything about the incident to call detectives at 712-6077, 712-6037 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-TIPS.
