The Department of Planning and Natural Resources is advising the public to refrain from using the waters of the Virgin Islands due to the severe erosion and flushing action associated with the recent rains and flooding.
The warning includes fishing and bathing. Heavy loads of sediment containing pollutants including municipal sewer and septic tank leaks. As a result of elevated bacteria levels and floating debris, coastal waters pose a health and safety risk, according to a statement from DPNR.
Three to five rain free days should see a marked improvement in turbidity and bacteria levels, according to DPNR.
All areas with storm water runoff, such as guts, puddles and drainage basins, also should be avoided, the department warned.
