Ninth Annual Barktoberfest Set for Sunday

The island will be going to the dogs Sunday. Not to worry, however, it’s the ninth annual Humane Society of St. Thomas Barktoberfest from noon to 5 p.m. at the Society’s new Humane Care Campus on the Weymouth Rhymer Highway.
Though the campus has yet to formally open, this is the second chance the public will have to tour the elegant doggie digs.
Last year marked the first time since the June 2006 groundbreaking ceremony that the facility was on public view.
The doggies will have their day and then some, with the annual contest featuring outrageous outfits—typically ranging from Fredericks of Hollywood-type attire and south-of-the-border sombreros to Halloween-themed attire—usually leaving the pooches looking a bit uncomfortable, while their owners waltz around having a grand time.
There’s prizes for best costume, best kisser (we did say uncomfortable), look-alikes, and a Pumpkin Patch Rally. Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers, along with a raffle with prizes, including a spiffy Coach bag.
While the furry crowd will be thoroughly occupied, there’s plenty for the two-footed kiddies to do. The second annual Haunted Pumpkin Patch will include interactive activities such as pumpkin decorating, Halloween games, and spooky mystery boxes.
Tours of the campus will be available all day, featuring the cutting-edge sound- and odor-contained kennels, where each dog will have complete privacy; dog play areas; a real cat house complete with window sills; dog runs; a dog-walking path where members can bring their own dogs; an on-campus animal-treatment center; and an area for the Police K-9 unit.
That is to say nothing of the iguana sanctuary, aviary, bunny hutch or the Corinne E. Lockhart Education Center. The Lockhart Companies donated land that made the $5 million project possible.
For those who just want a little respite for the afternoon, barbeque, burgers, hot dogs and homemade desserts will be offered for a modest price. They can be washed down with a bit of off-island class – the Princeton University Choir will provide song with an a cappella flair.
The afternoon will feature a parade of dogs and puppies available for adoption. T-shirts and other items to help support the campus will be available. The event is free.
