AZ Academy Awards Six Juanita Gardine Students Full Scholarships

(Photo: The six recipients standing during graduationAZ Academy has announced that six students who have attended the AZ Enrichment Center will be given full scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year. Paula Heller, executive director of AZ Academy, presented the student scholarships during the Juanita Gardine Elementary School’s 6th grade graduation, which was held on Wednesday, June 16.

Felicia Daniel, Kevin Lawrence, Jailine Manon, Mireja Baxter, Annalisa Viera and Kheyandrah Simmonds will be attending AZ Academy starting in September.
“I wanted us [AZ Academy] to be a part of these students’ journey; I taught the writing class, and I wanted to be a chapter in the book of their life – because I could see they were thirsty for opportunity and seeking more mentors to guide them,” said Heller.
The cost of providing these students full scholarships is $62,400 a year, which is in addition to the financial aid and scholarships already provided to 37 percent of the school’s currently enrolled students. AZ Academy is actively looking for companies and individuals to support its scholarship and financial aid programs, which allow the school to continue and expand its impact on the St. Croix community.
Those who would like to sponsor a student, please call Terri Wunschel, development director at 718-7909 or e-mail twunschel@azvi.org to arrange a meeting. Donations can also be made through the Web site at www.azvi.org. AZ Academy is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation.
